Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her creative and artistic side as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. Her aunt worked during the night shift as a nurse, so she could indulge her passion of theater and literature in the daytime. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of that art can be an instrument for activism. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay to express herself via art. DuVernay was a resident of Compton for most of her life, but would spend every summer with her father's extended family living in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma to later direct a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of a member of the jury as well as look through their trash. In the course of her tasks she was dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. The year 1999 was the time she founded her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. The company launched a number of promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
